Love, Joy, Peace...
What to Expect If You Join Us
Each Sunday, we gather as a church to hear from God’s Word, respond in worship, and encourage one another as the body of Christ.
Our worship services are shaped by the Bible and the gospel. Together, we seek to honor God, reflect on our need for His grace, and look to Jesus Christ as our hope.
People dress casually and comfortably—please come as you are.
The Preaching
We believe the faithful preaching of God’s Word is central to the life and health of the church.
Each Sunday, we preach from a passage of Scripture, seeking to understand its original meaning and apply it faithfully to our lives today. We are committed to clearly proclaiming the gospel—the good news of God saving sinners through His Son, Jesus Christ.
We typically preach through books of the Bible over several weeks at a time, helping us hear from the whole of God’s Word.
Music
Music is an important part of our worship at James River. We believe it has a unique ability to engage both the heart and the mind.
We sing a variety of songs—some old, some new—but all are theologically grounded and centered on God rather than ourselves. Our music is intended to support congregational participation rather than a performance.
You are welcome to join in singing or simply listen as you feel comfortable.
Giving
As part of our worship, we provide an opportunity for members to give in response to God’s grace. Visitors are not expected to participate in the offering.
Children in our Worship Service
James River is blessed to be a church filled with children. In fact, the number of children and adults in our congregation is nearly equal.
Children in second grade and younger are invited to attend a dedicated children’s class that begins after our time of singing, just before the sermon. Children of all ages are also welcome to remain with their families throughout the entire service.
We are accustomed to the sounds and presence of children in worship and gladly welcome them as part of our church family.
After the Service
Following our service, we invite everyone to stay for a time of fellowship. This is a relaxed, informal time to enjoy a snack and visit with others.
We’d love to meet you and are glad you’re with us.
